Last week I had the pleasure of meeting local Harlem Fashion Designer, Barron Wise. Barron has been designing fashion in Harlem for over 10 years. His specialty, as he likes to say is, “Couture for the Poor”.
He greeted me at the door and let me into his apartment-come-studio with a huge smile and lots of excited laughter. Immediately, I realized that every inch of space inside Barron’s apartment was taken over by fashion. Dresses, shoes, jewelry, fabrics, photos, two sewing machines and the biggest pair of scissors I have ever seen. Barron has traveled with his work, directed fashion ads, been on magazine covers and participated in countless fashion shows. Barron was kind enough to let me go through his wardrobe and before I knew it I had tried on everything in the room. Harlem has an exciting and eccentric style that is like no other and it’s for this very reason that Barron has made this his home. I spent a few hours chatting to Barron about life in Harlem and the fashion industry. His main message to me and the whole of Harlem was ‘look in your neighborhood’. You don’t have to go far away for that perfectly fitted dress. Barron can make you anything you want.
So Harlem, “look in your neighborhood”. Connect with Barron Wise on Romio from 8/20 to 8/24 as he engages with the Harlem community in new ways. We’ve collaborated together on drafting 5 questions that touch on Fashion, Harlem, and Style. We’d love to hear your stories. It’s a sure way to get the community talking and laughing about some of our best and worst fashion moments. And the best part of it all? You could win a custom-made dress by Barron Wise!
But remember, he’s a designer, and he will tell you when a dress you love doesn’t love you back.
